Instructor Training On A 1:1 Basis

You will get expert driving instructor training on a 1:1 basis to maximise learning & inter-activity. The Road To Becoming A Driving Instructor

Your first step to becoming a driving instructor is to apply to be put on the driving instructors register. The driving instructors register was set up by the driving standards agency to provide a good standard of driving tuition services to the general public. To apply for registration you will need to fill out and return an ADI3 application form. Download the ADI3 application form


You will need to take a criminal record check before applying for registration. You can apply for this check by contacting the Capita Recruitment Vetting Service on 0870 850 2455. They will send you an application form which will need to be completed then send back to them. A report will be then sent back to you by post which you will need when filling out the driving instructors registation form.

The Driving Instructor Examinations

To become an approved driving instructor you will need to successfully complete 3 examinations. Start driving tuition will fully prepare you for these examination with quality 1:1 training.


The 3 examinations are:

  • The Theory & Hazard Perception Test - (Part 1)
  • The Test Of Your Driving Ability (Part - 2)
  • The Test Of Your Instructional Ability (Part - 3)

The Multiple Choice Theory & Hazard Perception Test (Part 1)

The Multiple Choice Theory Test involves 100 question which relate to various driving issues. These questions will be divided into 4 sections call bands which are:


- Road Procedure
- Traffic Signs & Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians, Mechanical Knowledge
- Driving Test, Disabilities, Law
- Publications, Instructional Techniques


You will need to acheive an overall pass mark of 85%, in addition you will needs to score no less than 80% in any of the bands to be successful.


The Hazard Perception Test require you to watch 14 clips on a computer monitor, these clips will contain a total of 15 major hazards with 1 of the clip containing 2 major hazards. You will need to react accordingly identifying & reacting to any hazards using a computer mouse. Each major hazard identified will score between 5 - 0 points & you will need to score 57 point or more out of a possible 75 point in order to be successful with the hazard perception test


The Test Of Driving Ability (Part - 2)

The test of your driving ability will firstly require a candidate to:

  • Read a number plate from at least 27.5 metres (90ft)
  • Demonstrate basic vehicle maintenance checks

The main driving section of this test will require you to demonstrate a very good level of driving skills & procedures on a wide range of roads. This test will last for around 1 hour and during this period you are allowed to make no more than 6 driving faults, no serious faults & no dangerous faults.


To pass the test of driving abilty you will need to show:

- Expert handling of the cars controls
- Use of correct road procedures.
- Anticipated the action of other road users and taken appropriate action.
- Sound judgemental of distance, speed and timing.
- Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users.

The Test Of Instructional Ability (Part - 3)

The test of instructional ability will require you to demonstrate a high level of instructional & teaching skills. You will need to show that you have the ability to pass your driving knowledge & skills to a learner beginning driving lessons also a learner driver who is close to driving test standard. A supervising driving examiner will roleplay both senarios with each requiring different skills & a different level of tuition to suit the role played. This test will be split into 2 sections of 30 minutes and you will need to pass both sections to pass successfully.


Becoming An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)

With successful completion of the part 3 examination you will be given a application form to apply for you approved driving instructors badge.

The Trainee Licence To Give Instruction

On successful completion of the part 1 & 2 examinations you will have an option to apply for a trainee driving instructors licence. This licence will allow a candidate to teach and get paid for giving driving instruction whilst training for the part 3 examination. The trainee licence allows a candidate to gain essential experience and a insight in teaching learners to drive. With the addition of properly well structured driving instructor training this will give an invaluable experience in preparing for the part 3 examination and what is expected of a driving instructor
